How to buy furniture online that fits your home

Choose furniture from the retailer site for your country, verify the exact variant and full dimensions, place its footprint on a measured floor plan, and check the complete delivery route. Confirm local stock, delivery to your postcode, assembly, returns and a fitted backup before paying. A product is suitable only when the item, room and route all work together.

Buying furniture online works when you check three kinds of fit before paying: the product must fit the planned position, the room must still work around it, and the item must pass through the delivery route. Add a fourth check for the GCC: make sure you are viewing the retailer's correct country catalogue and that delivery is available to the exact city or postcode.

Product photos help you choose the look. Measurements, variant details, stock and delivery checks establish whether the item can work in your home.

1. Use the correct country site

Many retailer names appear across the GCC, but catalogue, stock, price and delivery coverage can differ by country. Begin from the retailer's local site or country selector, then set the delivery location before treating an item as available.

Check:

  • country and currency
  • selected size, colour and material
  • local stock status
  • delivery availability to the exact postcode or area
  • estimated delivery window shown for that location
  • assembly options
  • local return and cancellation terms

Do not use a search result snippet as the final source. Open the direct product page and save that URL. Recheck the page and cart before paying because stock and delivery can change.

Store-by-store delivery fees, assembly and return windows for Dubai are in the guide to where to buy furniture in Dubai.

2. Copy the exact product dimensions

Record the full external dimensions in centimetres:

  • width
  • depth
  • height
  • diagonal depth for sofas and chairs, where published
  • packaged dimensions, where published
  • weight
  • dimensions with extensions open
  • clearance required for hinged doors, drawers or recliners

Labels can mislead. A king mattress size does not tell you the outside width of the bed frame. A six-seat dining table does not tell you whether six chairs can be used comfortably in your room. A three-seat sofa does not describe its arm width or depth.

Make sure the dimensions belong to the selected variant. Product pages sometimes group several widths, orientations or modules together.

3. Put the item on the floor plan

Draw the item at its exact width and depth in the proposed position. If you do not have a usable drawing yet, follow the floor-plan furnishing guide.

Then ask:

  • Does it block a door, balcony or wardrobe?
  • Can drawers and cabinet doors open?
  • Can dining chairs be pulled out and used?
  • Is the TV, view or work surface in the right direction?
  • Does the height interfere with a window, switch or wall-mounted screen?
  • Is there still a clear route through the room?

Mark the footprint with painter's tape in the real room when possible. This makes scale and placement easier to judge before delivery.

4. Check the whole delivery route

A product can fit the room and still fail at the building entrance, lift, corridor or final turn. Measure from the outside access point to the planned position: doors, the lift, corridors and corners, stairs, and the final room doorway. The apartment measurements checklist lists every opening to record.

Compare each opening with the furniture's published delivery measurements, not its assembled size. Ask the retailer whether legs, arms, backs or modules detach, and whether the published size is assembled or packaged.

5. Read beyond the product title

Check materials, care, construction, comfort and included parts. For upholstered items, look for seat depth and seat height as well as the overall dimensions. For storage, inspect internal shelves and door type. For beds, confirm whether the slats, base, headboard and mattress are included or separate.

Look at customer photos for scale clues, but do not use them as measurement evidence. The product specification and retailer confirmation should settle fit questions.

For colour, compare several product images and read the material name. Screens, lighting and photography can shift the appearance. If the colour is critical, request or view a swatch where the retailer offers one.

6. Check the complete cost

Add the item price, quantity, delivery, assembly and any required accessories. A dining chair price may be per chair. A bed may need a separate mattress and slatted base. Curtains may need multiple panels, a track and installation.

Keep the design fee separate from the retailer budget. The guide to furniture budget vs interior design fee shows how to track the plan, goods and setup as distinct costs.

7. Read the local return terms before buying

Confirm the return window, condition requirements, collection fees and exclusions for assembled, made-to-order, clearance or hygiene-sensitive products. Use the terms on the destination country's official retailer site. If the policy is unclear for a large item, ask the retailer in writing before ordering.

A generous return policy does not replace measuring. Large-furniture collection can still take time and cost money, and some custom variants cannot be returned.

8. Keep one fitted backup for every anchor

Choose a second sofa, bed, dining table, desk or storage piece that fits the same planned slot and budget band. A useful backup needs the same checks as the first choice: real dimensions, correct orientation, local stock, direct product URL and delivery coverage.

This prevents one stock change from forcing a rushed redesign. It also makes price comparison easier because you already know which alternative works.

A final pre-purchase record

For each anchor item, save:

Field What to record
Product Name, retailer and direct URL
Variant Size, colour, material and orientation
Dimensions Width, depth, height and diagonal depth if relevant
Plan position Room and exact slot
Access Tightest door, lift or turn checked
Availability Country, city or postcode, stock and date checked
Full cost Quantity, delivery, assembly and accessories
Backup Direct link to a fitted alternative

HomePrint does this planning work inside a Design Pack, then shows the chosen pieces in furnished renders and an interactive walkthrough. It remains design-only: you approve the list and order directly from the retailers.

For an apartment outside Dubai, send the floor plan, city and country first. HomePrint will confirm whether enough local retailer coverage can be verified before booking. You can also see current AED design fees or browse the guides hub for more planning help.

Frequently asked questions

What furniture dimensions should I check online?

Check full width, depth and height, plus the size of the exact variant. For beds, use the outside frame dimensions rather than the mattress label. For extendable tables, check both closed and open sizes. For sofas and chairs, look for diagonal depth, removable parts and packaged dimensions as well.

How can I tell whether online furniture will fit my room?

Place the exact product footprint on a measured floor plan, then mark it on the floor with painter's tape. Test doors, drawers, curtains, chairs and the main walking routes around it. Review the height against windows, switches and wall-mounted items. A footprint can fit while the room still works poorly.

What should I check when ordering furniture in the GCC?

Use the retailer's site for the destination country, select the correct city or postcode, and confirm stock, price, delivery, assembly and return terms at checkout. Do not assume an item shown on another country's site can be supplied locally. Save the exact product link and variant, then recheck before paying.

Does HomePrint order furniture for customers?

No. HomePrint prepares the plan, linked shopping list, budget, furnished renders and walkthrough, but the customer orders directly. For locations outside Dubai, send the city and country before booking. HomePrint first confirms that suitable local retailer coverage and deliverable products can be checked for that market.
